Redemption - made of win!
Made of win - literally :) I was on the team that won the pub quiz, and I was mildly disgruntled to discover that the sequel to Little Women was not in fact Good Wives, but was Little Men. I thought the quiz was wrong, but I have now looked this up and I am pleased to annonce that the quiz, and myself, were both right! Apparently in the States the first two parts of Little Women are published together under that title, and in the UK they are published separately as Little Women and Good Wives. So Little Men is the sequel, but only in the States! (Which in a UK quiz... *grumble*) It doesn't matter though, because we won anyway - and I think that's a first for me! Yay!

Then, later on, I helped out elenopa with a skit for the Masquerade, and we won that too! elenopa had made the costume of Victorian Torchwood - Emily, I think - the one in the skirt, as opposed to the culottes, and I was Captain Jack. She beat me up and straddles me - Jack should be happy enough! The win is the first time for elenopa too, I think. I was very pleased with that!

Then, later on again, there was another balloon debate. I was playing Merry Brandybuck, at your service - and despite being a hobbit with no understanding of space-ships (we were crashing in one) nevertheless won, in that he was the last one left! I think no-one wanted to throw the cute out of the airlock :)

And while not judged in the same way, I would say the Man of Iron reading went down a storm as well. Random people I've never met before (and obviously lovely peeps I had :) came up to congratulate my Avon - who got Vila to propose to him with a teleport bracelet, and rather enjoyed being beaten up while Servalan watched :) It was hilarious and wonderful, as ever.

So that's my Redemption for the win - there were loads of other things, panels, parties, loads of good conversations in the bar - a memorable shouting match with Piers over Bonekickers :) A particularly scurrilous innuendo-fest with Rob Shearman. Tons of stuff - there's never enough time. Roll on 2011!

I thought Little Men was the sequel to Jo's Boys? Or was it the other way round?

Jo's Boys is the sequel to Little Men.

Other way around... :)

Yes, that is bad setting on the part of whoever wrote the quiz. US/UK differences should be noted when writing the questions. I remember a particularly bad example from the British Quizzing Championships once, where the question-master refused to accept that the first novel in the His Dark Materials trilogy was Northern Lights. It transpired that they had ripped off the questions from a tournament in the US, and the writer had thought that the only valid answer was The Golden Compass. *Sigh* Still, you triumphed all the same!

(Interesting fact: Torchwood is one of the very few sci-fi programmes to mention pub quizzing. Tosh tries to pass off her interest in the myth of Philoctetes in "Greeks Bearing Gifts" as a question from a pub quiz.)

Good to hear that Merry won the balloon debate. I am sure that Mr. Brandybuck would be very useful when a spaceship is malfunctioning. Freakishly strong short people are ideal for sending up Jeffreys Tubes :).

I am glad you had such a good time!

I knew you'd sympathise with the quiz question - at least niggling questions like that can be answered these days at the touch of a button!

And a couple of people came up to me after the balloon debate to marvel that they'd let Merry survive when he's probably the least useful in a crashing spaceship! :)

I didn't know there was a sequel to Little Women. I've learned something today - I can go home now :)

It's understandable; you were born some years after they did them on the BBC. Little Women and Good Wives, that is. I've never seen a dramatisation of Jo's Boys and Little Men.

There's actually several - in this country, it's Little Women, Good Wives, Little Men, Jo's Boys. *takes off pedants's hat* :)

Yes, great to see you, I hadn't realised you had won absolutely everything it was possible to win at the con, but it doesn't surprise me :-)

It must have been in the air - I was a green Drazi too :)

Yay! Sorry I didn't see you to say goodbye, but I'm glad we had some time to catch up!

And bloody well done for all the winning! elenopa's outfit was marvellous and I am glad that you were both rewarded!

It was great, wasn't it? I'm so happy for elanopa - she's been trying to win for ages! I'll see you at next White Crow, maybe, unless I drag myself to LX...
