Merlin!
So Merlin has started and it makes me happy!

This first episode is not the best, but it eases us into things, it gives us a dark feel, which might be how things will go later in the series (how many peasants were killed? Good heavens!) There was fanservice for Merlin/Arthur fans, with all the testing of Merlin's devotion etc, and Merlin kneeling in front of the horse for the leg-up etc. And also there was the starting hint of Gwen/Arthur, if you're into such things. Arthur seems to have reverted to his prattish self, but hopefully that will change soon too.

Also, I can now say the big scene at the end when Merlin confronts Sigan? That was the scene that I watched being filmed! I will have to do another picspam soon.

And just as the squeeing couldn't increase, in the Secrets and Magic extra, there I was along with lots of us, in the front row at the Expo! It's sort of cool and embarrassing at the same time... :)

I'll have to watch the extra thing now.

So you watched the Star Wars dialogue being filmed then?

I think I spotted you.

It's literally for about 2 seconds - my fifteen minutes of fame has got some time to run... :)

Yep! 'I will grow more powerful than you can possibly imagine!'etc. Over and over again, for about six hours or so. Plus a tiny close-up when Arthur gets rocks dropped on his head, which I also spotted, and which made it into the finished product. Yay!

Re: Arthur's Prattish Self

I wish bitching to Kerry for a good 2 hours last night about the steps back in their relationship. Not even because of the A/M'ness of it all (because that was there same as always), but because it didn't feel like it matched the relationship they set up at the end of s1. Kerry suggested that perhaps Arthur was an ass to set up his prattishness for new viewers and that it'll go back to normal soon. I HOPE SO!

I agree with your friend. I think they wanted to make the conflicts *really* apparent for the new viewers.

I know! But I agree with Kerry - I think it was to remind the audience of the dynamic, and they can explore it from there. I think, in character, that I can justify it, because everyone has an off day, particularly Arthur, I think. Although I have to squint a bit sideways to make it fit, I admit :)

I suspect that prattish!Arthur is going to be a recurring theme. It's an effective way to keep Arthur from being too perfect and to increase viewers' identification with Merlin.

I do agree, but I did think they pushed it a little hard in this ep - I am hopeful that it's to remind the audience that this is the dynamic, and they'll ease up with the heavy-handedness soon.

Hang on, you went to see it being filmed? AWESOME.

Twice! Although the scene I saw being filmed the second time was Arthur and Merlin with a horse and cart, so it won't be so easy to identify :)

I guessed it was the one you saw filmed as I vaguely remembered you mentioning Crook.

Have to be honest possibly my least favorite episode storywise, if just didnt seem to flow well and crook was, well, crap.

It seems to me the episode was purely there for three reasons

1. lots of stuff to keep m/a fans happy
2. to start the Arthur Gwen stuff
3. To get the Dragon to turbo charge Merlins powers.

All good things but it all seemed very ... forced.

That said the trailer at the end does promise lots of good stuff (even spotted Mordred in there) ...

But ... I now need to go back and see if I can spot you.

I dont get why its still not on in HD over here as it is broadcast in HD in the US ...

I didn't think Mackenzie Crook was that bad! I particularly liked him as Cedric, but he didn't change quite enough as Sigan, so it felt that bit was a touch forced.

My main complaint was that Arthur had regressed in his interactions with Merlin etc. They were good friends as well as master and servant by the end of last season, and that was ignored in this episode, but hopefully, it was only to remind the audience of the dynamic. I expect better as the season progresses!

Yay! I have noted elsewhere how this pleases me.

Already the Crossover Demon that lurks in my subconscious like the Dragon in its cave is wheedling away. I am unholily tempted by the possibilities for a team-up with Krod Mandoon: Arthur and Krod comparing who looks better bare-chested; Aneka and Morgana vying for Alpha Female status; Zez on Uther's block for his (doubtfully-existent) magic; Bruce helpfuly spelling out all the A/M vibes about which everyone else is discreetly silent... In all seriousness, Uther's insecurity would make a lot more sense if Camelot was actually an independent kingdom on the fringes of the Xanusian Empire.

It does need a plot, though. I could have Dongalor kidnap Gwen in order to slake his nefarious lusts. But I have already done that with a different Gwen :)

I like it! Or, at least, when you write it I will certainly read it! :)

Maybe Morgana can have seen in her dreams some nefarious scheme that Dongalor is planning? He might not even have thought of it yet!

BTW, I believe you're in Oxford now? Where are you living? If you're up for possibly gaming in the week sometime, Ben is off to Sheffield soon, and I will therefore have more time free...

Yes, indeed! I am living in my old College now. Would certainly be up for gaming.
